Another season full of hopes and dreams began at the DW Stadium where Wigan Athletic took on the European Champions Chelsea.

Nothing is better than the opening weekend after 14 weeks of no club football but only the Latics could ruin what was supposed to be an enjoyable day.

New faces were in each side, Ivan Ramis was part of the back three and was faced with the task of marking new signing Eden Hazard.

The first 7 minutes were horrific for the Latics. First of all Branislav Ivanovic sliced through the Latics defence and slotted home past Ali Al Habsi. Brilliant start. After this came more misery. New boy Ramis upended Hazard to concede a penalty which was duly dispatched by Frank Lampard.

Apart from the opening the Latics looked decent. Some good passing and decent movement upfront, the only thing lacking was a goal. Victor Moses, who’s head has been turned by Chelsea showed flashes of brilliance but also had poor spells.

As Roberto Martinez would say there are positives to take from the game, one being it wasn’t Burnley we lost to on the opening day, but the Latics need to improve quickly to beat a strong Southampton side.

Arouna Koné looks like he’s going to be a decent signing but he needs more game time.

It’s only the first day and it was the European Champions so no need to panic…yet!
