A local newspaper is running the story that Roger Espinoza could well play his last game for Wigan Athletic tonight when Sheffield Wednesday are the visitors.
The lure of going back to the MLS at his old club Kansas is very appealing and could well see the FA Cup Winner make an early exit from the DW Stadium.
There he would undoubtedly play more first team games, something that hasn’t been a regularity here at Wigan. But talks are still going on and he is definitely wanted by the Manager and Directors, so maybe he could have a change of heart.
The Wigan Evening Post (Paul Kendrick) quotes him:
“I’ll speak to the club again but the decision could even be made before the game,” Espinoza told Wigan Today.
“It’s been a great two years here, but I took the decision not too long ago.
“You could see it kind of coming, it’s time for me to look somewhere else.
“There’s been a lot of changes going on with the team and managers, and obviously that’s been tough both for me and some other players.
“I decided it was time, I spoke to some of the directors here, they all did their best to help me and I thank them for that.”
Espinoza admits the pull of returning to the MLS, and a possible reunion with former club Sporting Kansas City, was too tempting – both on and off the pitch.
“There’s times you think you’re going to cross that line and play every game, and it just hasn’t happened for me.”
